How to Teach Your Child About Memorial Day

Our country sets aside a day every year to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the military. This year on May 30, take an opportunity to teach your child about the significance of Memorial Day. Wherever you decide to celebrate, there are plenty of ways to honor the fallen as a family.

Go to the Museum

It’s hard to overstate how valuable museums are for hands-on learning. Reading about history or hearing about it in class doesn’t measure up to seeing it up close. Historical museums display items like paintings, medals and military vehicles, allowing your child to see these items firsthand. Many museums have special events in honor of Memorial Day. Check online to see if there are special exhibitions at a museum near you.

Create Care Packages

Members of the military spend time far from home, and that can be isolating. Consider putting together care packages with your child that include items like personal care products and handwritten letters to send to those who are currently deployed. This is a great way to make soldiers feel loved and teach your child about the importance of doing things just to show you care.

Take a Road Trip

While the most famous patriotic destinations are mostly in the northeastern US, there are plenty of military places to visit right here in Florida. The Korean War Memorial in Tallahassee is an art installation that symbolizes an incomplete circle of life and the experience of serving during a war. If you’re visiting the keys, you can find a historical military memorial in Mallory Square. Florida is also home to many veteran memorial parks, including one in Lake Nona.

Participate in a Parade

Parades are typically run by volunteers or put on by local community leaders, and they can always use help. Find a Memorial Day parade happening near you, and see if your family can put in time, even if it’s just walking and handing out beads for a local business. This is a great way to have fun while giving back to the community in honor of this important holiday.
