5 Fun Easter Activities for Families

Easter is one of the most important holidays on the Catholic liturgical calendar. It’s the day we come together to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. For many families, it’s also a day that lends itself to quality time. The typical holiday traditions, like decorating eggs and going to church, are almost inevitable on this day. Here are a few more fun activities you can do with your family to celebrate Easter:

DIY Easter Baskets

Easter baskets are one of the holiday traditions that children look forward to the most. Make it even better by creating Easter baskets together! Make a fun DIY Easter basket for your child, or help them make their own. You can go a more traditional route by buying a basket and jazzing it up or play around with materials like mason jars and tiny picket fences from the craft store. No matter who — or what —  makes the Easter basket, the gift will feel all the more special when it’s homemade.

Egg-and-Spoon Race

A symbol of rebirth, eggs are essential to a great Easter celebration. An egg-and-spoon race can be a fun way to use leftover eggs. Put an egg on a large spoon, and see who can get theirs across the yard fastest without breaking it. Hard boil the eggs first unless you’re not worried about cleaning up the mess a raw egg can make. Everyone in the family can get involved as racers or as cheerleaders on the sidelines. If you want to make it challenging for older players, have them put the spoons in their mouths instead of carrying them with their hands!

Make Brunch Together

Whether you’re having people over or just having brunch with the immediate family, this is another great way to incorporate everyone into an annual tradition. Have your child help with age appropriate kitchen activities. Younger children can knead dough, and older children can help with measuring and mixing ingredients. You may find that this is even better than going out for brunch at your favorite restaurant.

Stack the Easter Egg Shells

Once the Easter egg hunt is over, the plastic shells are typically thrown out or put away until next year. One way you can use these shells while bringing out your family’s competitive side is to have an egg shell stacking contest. See how high each family member can stack plastic egg shells before they fall. This game is all about precision and balance, and it could make for funny pictures or videos to look back on in the future.

Guess How Many Jelly Beans

Being able to visually inspect a jar and guess how many items are in it is a rare skill, even for the wisest adults. To play this game, count out jelly beans while throwing them into a jar. Have everyone tell you their guesses, and make sure to record who guessed what number. You can give the jelly beans out as a prize or decide on another prize everyone in the family would enjoy. Either way, no one can resist this kind of competition.
