Staying Active Over Summer Break

Summer break in Florida may seem like the perfect time to stay inside to avoid the extreme weather. However, it’s important for the health of children and adults alike to get some sunlight on a daily basis. With the help of vitamin D from sunlight, children can grow healthy bones, build a strong immune system and reduce their chances of chronic illness later in life. Here are some of the best ways for you and your child to stay active over the summer.

Swimming Lessons

Taking swimming lessons benefits children in many ways. Swimming is a life-saving skill, and feeling confident swimming can mean your child is safer around larger bodies of water, like beaches and lakes. Swim lessons also improve your kid’s ability to hold their own in the water.. Practicing swimming with your child between lessons and slowly removing the life jacket and floaties will boost their confidence and give you something fun to do as a family.

Go Out as a Family

Whether you’re more into biking, hiking, or letting your child burn off energy at the beach, going out as a family is a great way to encourage your child to stay active. Make sure there’s always something to hold your child’s attention, whether it’s discovering new areas or playing with outdoor toys. Hold everyone in the family to the same standard when you go out. If you want your child to stay screen-free, try to avoid taking out your phone between activities and focus on family time.

Let Children Help with Yard Work

Children can always benefit from learning over the summer. When deciding what to let your child do in the yard, consider their age and comfort level. If they’re not big on bugs, start with sweeping the porch or watering plants. Older children may be able to help with mowing the lawn. If playing in the dirt is their idea of a good time, see if they want to help with planting or pulling weeds. Whatever activity you choose for them, keep in mind that you may have to go behind them and re-do a little bit of it yourself.

Summer Camp

It can be difficult to let your child go out on their own, but summer camp is where the best childhood memories are made. From making s’mores around the campfire to learning all about poison ivy, camping gives your child a chance to spend time away from home and the challenges of daily life.

Holy Redeemer Catholic School’s Summer Knights Camp is going on now for campers from pre-K4 through 8th grade with these four themes:

  • Athletic children can enjoy Knights Team Sports, which provides opportunities to play various team sports.

  • Florida Fun Week brings the beach to Kissimmee with outdoor activities like waterslide days, as well as indoor movie and tech learning days.

  • Brainy children thrive at Enrichment and Academics camp, which allows them to experience the arts and STEM with fun hands-on learning activities.

  • For the pre-K4 children, Sea-Venture camp introduces them to the wonders of science.

At our Osceola private schools, we encourage our students to stay healthy and active all year round. Our main goal is to instill leadership and compassion in our students through rigorous academics and a foundation of faith. We foster an atmosphere of care and an environment of high expectations and effective discipline. To learn more about what makes us different, contact us here.
