Pumpkin-Carving for Children

Nothing puts you in the autumnal spirit quite like carving a pumpkin. This tradition can be a great activity for you to do with your child this fall season. St. Cloud private schools offer some fun pumpkin-carving ideas for you and your child.

Pick a Pumpkin
Your carving adventure can start right when you get to the pumpkin patch. You and your child can pick out the pumpkin he wants to carve together. Look for a pumpkin with smooth skin and a flat front surface that will be easy to carve on. Let your child inspect the pumpkin and make sure there are no soft spots, nicks, or cuts, as these can be signs of a rotting or infected pumpkin.

Play With Paint
If you'd rather not hassle with carving a pumpkin this year, pumpkin painting is a fun alternative your child can do with you. With different colors of paint and extra craft supplies like pom-poms or construction paper, you can turn your gourds into your child's favorite animal, character, or Halloween monster. Think Outside the Jack-O'-Lantern
There are so many fun and inventive ways to carve pumpkins that go beyond a scary or silly face. When you're carving with your child, you may want to choose an easy design that doesn't require much carving to keep your child's interest while you carve. You can accessorize your pumpkin with crafty decorations that minimize the amount of actual carving. Check out these owl pumpkin and cat pumpkin designs for examples of this type of decorating.

Safety First!
As with any activity involving a sharp knife, you'll want to take some safety precautions when you go to carve your pumpkin. Don't try to carve the pumpkin quickly so you can check it off your list of fall to-dos. Take your time and use small, controlled movements. Keep your hands and carving tools dry, and make sure to place your pumpkin on a flat, stable work surface to keep it from wobbling or moving around while you carve.
