Mary Crafts for Children

The May Crowning is a longstanding Catholic tradition that venerates the Blessed Mary, the mother of God. Observing the May Crowning can be difficult during quarantine, but it’s possible to honor Mary safely at home. We’ve come up with a list of ways to celebrate Mary’s Month!

Crowning of Mary
Catholics have dedicated the month of May to Mary, a time when she is honored for being the mother of God. Traditionally in the Church, Catholics create a dedicated area to place an image or statue, then place flowers and other devotional items around it. To memorialize Mother Mary, the tribute remains up throughout the entire month. The “May Crowning” is set up to display her queenship as the mother of God. Because she gave birth to the Holy Body, she is our own mother who gave birth to us spiritually.

Mary Crafts
Your child can find joy and stay busy by participating in Mary arts and crafts. By allowing her to create her own pieces of art, it will have a sentimental touch on such a holy holiday. Her finished piece can be used on the Mary altar during the Crowning. Here are some crafts for Mary:

  • Baking: Honor the Virgin Mary by baking sweets, such as this colorful cake.

  • Crown: Honor the Blessed Mother by creating a crown made of flowers and ribbon!

  • Cross stitch: The internet has a variety of Mary cross stitch patterns your child can do. Consider this Mary and Jesus template from Catholic Sprouts!

  • Beading: Your child can design her own DIY rosary with just a few supplies!

  • Sewing: If you are a sewer, make the Virgin Mary dress with instructions from this YouTube video.

  • Candle making: Instead of going out and buying candles, an engaging project is making candles right at home with this YouTube tutorial.

At-Home Adoration
By setting up your own altar, you can honor our Mother from home. Although it may not have the same feeling as attending a Church service, it’s important to be patient during these difficult times and know that Jesus is lovingly watching us. Display a statue or image of Mary in a designated place with devotional flowers, candles, and the crafts your child made. Put on a church service, listen to worship music, and read the Scripture with your child, while praying the Rosary. Remember Jesus is with you.
