Mother's Day Bible Verses

The Bible calls us to honor our mother and father, and Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to make sure our mothers, grandmothers, and aunts feel loved and appreciated. This Mother’s Day, let’s praise God for the roles that mothers have! Take a look at what else the Bible has to say about the importance of motherhood:

A Mother’s Teaching

Scripture emphasizes a mother’s influence and the importance of children heeding their mother’s wisdom. Proverbs 1:8-9 says, “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.” In Titus 2:3-5, King Solomon compares a mother’s teaching to a beautiful piece of jewelry. From scripture, we learn that a mother’s teaching is to be prized.

Called to Honor

In Leviticus 19, God speaks to Moses and asks him to pass on His words to the congregation of Israel. God instructs that “each of [us] must show great respect for [our] mother and father,” and we must revere them. No matter our age or place in life, the maternal figures in our lives deserve our honor and respect.

Compassion

In Isaiah 49:15, scripture asks, “Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?” This passage is praising mothers as symbols of incredible compassion, as they will never forget the children they love so much.

Compared to God’s Love

A mother’s love is so powerful that in Isaiah 66, God uses it as a metaphor for how He loves us. Scripture says that “as one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you.” Mothers are a beautiful example of the love that we are called to follow and show to others.

Called to Care

Throughout the Bible, we are called and encouraged to care for our mothers and bring them joy. Proverbs 23 tells us to “give respect to your father and mother, for without them you wouldn’t be here. And don’t neglect them when they grow old… So may your father’s heart burst with joy and your mother’s soul be filled with gladness because of you.”
