Make a Pie for Pi Day

pi-day-pie.jpg

Whether your child knows the first hundred digits of pi by heart or is just a fan of sweets, they’ll love the idea of eating pie on Pi Day. Once a year on March 14th (3/14), math nerds and baking enthusiasts come together to celebrate this punny mathematical concept. Take this opportunity to teach your child about baking and math at the same time.

What is Pi?

Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Every perfect circle is just over three times its width around. While pi has been calculated to over one trillion digits, most people know it as 3.14. Here is a pie recipe we encourage you to try with your child to celebrate the occasion:

Triple Berry Pi Day Pie

Ingredients

  • 3 refrigerated pie crusts, softened as directed on box

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 5 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 2 tablespoons quick-cooking tapioca

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 3 cups fresh or frozen (thawed and drained) blackberries

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen (thawed and drained) raspberries

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen (thawed and drained) blueberries SAVE $

  • 1 tablespoon milk

  • 2 teaspoons sugar

Steps

  1. Heat oven to 450°F. Unroll one crust in an ungreased 9-inch glass pie plate. Press the crust firmly against the side and bottom. Trim along the edge. Set aside.

  2. Unroll one crust on the work surface. Using small number-shaped cutters, cut out numerals representing pi to as many digits as desired (for example, 3.1415926). Set aside.

  3. In a large bowl, stir together one cup sugar, the cornstarch, tapioca and salt; gently toss with berries. Let stand 15 minutes. Spoon into a crust-lined pie plate.

  4. Unroll one crust on the work surface. Using a small sharp knife, cut the pi symbol in the center of the crust. Place crust over filling. Wrap excess top crust under bottom crust edge. Press edges together to seal; flute. Brush crust with milk; arrange numerals around edge of crust. Sprinkle crust with 2 teaspoons of sugar.

  5. Place the pie on the middle oven rack; place a large cookie sheet on the rack below the pie plate in case of spillover. Bake for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 375°F. Cover the edge of the crust with strips of foil to prevent excessive browning. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes longer or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. Let stand 2 hours before serving.
