How Your Child Can Save the Planet: Earth Day

As 1 Timothy 4:12 says: “Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.” Encourage your child to remember that although they’re young, they have the power to make a difference! This Earth Day, teach them about how they can care for God’s creation. No More Plastic Bottles: Instead of a plastic bottle, get your child a reusable water bottle. At school, sports practice, or dress rehearsals, she can refill her bottle instead of throwing away single-use plastic.Turn Off Lights: Encourage your child to conserve energy and take care of the planet by turning off lights when she leaves the room. Grocery Bags: Give your child a job when it’s time to take a trip to the market! Explain to her why you want to minimize how much plastic we use, and ask for her help. Ask her to help you gather up the reusable grocery bags, and after you’ve unloaded the groceries, give her a mission to put the bags back in the car. Keep a running tally of how many plastic bags you’ve avoided using!Limit Water Usage: Remind your child that all it takes to make a difference is taking shorter showers or turning off the water when she brushes her teeth.Care for Animals: All animals and insects play important roles in our environment. Help your child research and plant a bee-friendly garden, donate toys to an animal shelter, or craft a pinecone bird feeder. You can also take a family trip to clean up litter at your local park or beach. Explain the risk of leaving litter in nature; ducks can get stuck in plastic soda rings, and birds can chew and ingest tiny pieces of plastic. Don’t Stop Learning: By continuing to learn about the Earth, your child can discover new ways that she can take care of it and develop her passion for nature. She can watch movies about animals, read books about the rainforest, visit the zoo, or even learn about the environment while creating nature-themed snacks.Osceola County private schools proclaim the Gospel message within an academic environment of excellence that challenges students to be creative and critical thinkers.
