How to Teach Your Child Bible Verses

Teaching your child Bible verses can be a struggle if you don’t use learning tactics made for her learning style. Whether your child is a visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learner, these fun and easy activities can help her learn Bible verses faster and with more enthusiasm!Auditory Learner Activities

  • Sing It
    • Turn the words of the Bible verse you want to teach your child into a song using a simple tune like “The Itsy Bitsy Spider.” Then, sing the verse with your child until she has it memorized on her own!
  • Repeat It
    • Start by saying one word of the verse and have your child repeat that word back to you. Gradually add on more words, one at a time, until you and your child are repeating the entire verse back and forth to each other.
  • Discuss It
    • Break the verse down into parts. For older children, this is a great opportunity to explain larger words and expand their vocabulary. If you have an older child and are looking for a more advanced angle, you can talk with her about the historical context and how the original languages can translate differently in English.

Visual Learner Activities

  • Write It
    • Get your child a notepad so he can copy down the verse two or three times. This is a great way to utilize his memorization skills and have him practice his handwriting at the same time!
  • Index cards
    • Using index cards, have your child write out the name of each verse you would like them to learn on one side of the card and the actual verse on the other. Then, flip through the index cards and have your child try to guess each verse based on its name and vice versa. Take turns quizzing each other!
  • “Billboard” It
    • Put a chalkboard or whiteboard somewhere in your home. Write out a “verse of the day” or “verse of the week” for your child to read as she passes by. Another simple way to achieve the same effect is to use a whiteboard marker to write out a verse on your child’s mirror.

Kinesthetic Learner Activities

  • Unscramble Puzzle
    • Puzzles combine the visual and physical aspects of learning and can help your child focus on committing verses to memory. Clipping out small sections of a verse and having your child put the pieces together to make the verse complete will really help him memorize it.
  • Act It Out
    • For kinesthetic learners, it’s best to use tactile methods like touching materials and taking a more active approach. That’s why physically acting out a scene or story from the Bible is a great way to make verses stick with your child!
  • Bounce and Jump
    • Your active learner will love memorization if he can keep moving while learning! Try letting him sit on an exercise ball so he can bounce as you read together, or incorporate Bible verse quizzes into driveway games like basketball and asking for a verse every time he shoots a basket.
