Edible Science Experiments

Looking for ways to get your children excited about math and science? Want a way to help them hone their skills in these subjects while also spending quality time together in a way the whole family can enjoy? Check out the fun experiments below to get to cooking with your little scientist!Rock CandyA combination of water, sugar, and patience can turn into a lesson in crystallization! You and your child will love making this recipe for rock candy. Your child will be amazed as the sugar “magically” dissolves into liquid and then re-crystallizes on a stick over the course of a week. Edible EarthTake a creative spin on homemade Rice Krispies treats by teaching your child about the various layers of the earth! Add in gooey layers of yummy marshmallow, Nutella, frosting, and sprinkles. Decide ahead of time what ingredients will determine what layers of the Earth — we suggest Nutella for the molten core and frosting for the top, with sprinkles being mountains/people and various options living on the surface. Then, tell your child about each layer as you build your treats, making sure the thickness of the layer is proportionate to that of the real Earth layer. When the treats have solidified, cut out a square and let your child see what it would be like to cut out a hunk of the Earth!Creating Butter and Whipped CreamEvery child should experience the science of emulsion — which doubles as a surprisingly challenging arm workout — that is making butter and whipped cream. All it takes to create is heavy whipping cream from your local grocery store! Jell-O EyesDid you know the way in which your eyes take in and reflect light can be demonstrated with a laser pointer and Jell-O? This is because Jell-O is made of ingredients that allow light to pass through and be reflected, so you can see what path your laser pointer takes when it meets the Jell-O. You can even form your Jell-O into various shapes (an opportunity to teach your children about concave and convex shapes, anyone?) and then test out all the various paths the light will take! As an added bonus, you and your child can snack on the Jell-O afterward.Kissimmee private schools proclaim the Gospel message within an academic environment of excellence that challenges students to be creative and critical thinkers.
