Christmas Ornaments Children Can Make

Yes, shopping for Christmas decorations is extremely fun! We know your child looks forward to going to the store and choosing the ornaments. But add a personal touch to your tree by making Christmas ornaments yourselves! For homemade, DIY ornaments, all you need is some basic craft supplies. Let your child tap into his creative side with these easy, personalized ornament ideas from St. Cloud private schools.

Chalkboard Ornaments
The tree may have your child’s name all over it — but does it really? Have him create a chalkboard ornament that has his name on it! To start, spray a round piece of papier-mache ornament with chalkboard paint. Add a snowflake cutout and fuzzy pom-poms for the edges. Then, take chalk or a marker and, have him write his name on it!

Pine Cone Ornaments
Add a touch of nature to your child’s craft. Go outside and collect a few pine cones. Turn them into pinecone people by adding an adorable bead face, a cap made from felt, and a ribbon scarf! These festive winter characters will add a whimsical element to your tree!

Cookie Cutter Ornaments
This sweet and simple ornament will be super easy for your child to make. After you’re done baking Christmas cookies, wash the cookie cutters because it’s time for a cookie-cutter craft! Just take some festive ribbon and wrap the cutter until it’s entirely covered. Tie a piece of twine to the top to display!

Birdhouse Ornament
This unique idea is perfect for the child who loves animals! Start with a cork, then add a miniature paper cone to the top. Glue a small button to the front as the entrance to the birdhouse. Wrap  a piece of metallic pipe cleaner around the bottom of the house, and insert a toothpick for the bird to “sit.” Add beads to a piece of 20-gauge wire, then stick it on top to hang on your tree!

Filled Ornaments
Your child will love making a holiday scene inside of an ornament! All you need is a clear sphere-shaped plastic ball. Your child can insert fake snow, pieces of tinsel or tree, and other accents. Small toys can be used for animals, such as deer.
