Good Study Habits

Start preparing for your child’s success and future grades now. Practice good study habits, such as time management and organization. By starting early, your child will strengthen his skills and feel ready when he takes on a more challenging workload in high school.

Talk About It

Forming a bond and understanding your child starts with having open discussions with them. Talk to him about how he feels about starting this journey. He may feel excitement or nervousness, or even both. Ask him his concerns and see what you can do to reduce his stress. If he’s worried about getting lost, take a school tour before he begins. If he’s worried about the workload, create a calendar. Finding solutions to his worries will teach him the necessary problem-solving skills he needs to grow.

Take a Tour

Your child may feel overwhelmed about starting at a new campus. Before he starts classes, take advantage of the opportunity to do a school tour. He will learn key locations, such as the library, cafeteria, homeroom, and the counselor's office. He will become familiar with the school and be more at ease about starting.

Attend Orientation

By attending the orientation, your child will be able to get his class schedule, meet his teachers, and learn what to expect. He will also have the opportunity to meet his new classmates and start building relationships before the first day of school.

Set Goals

Sit down with your child and set goals before his first day. The goals should be academic-focused, as well as social. They can be big or small, short term or long term. For example, he can set goals like finishing homework by a certain time or joining a club to make friends.

Find Clubs and Socialize

Take a look at the clubs and extracurriculars your child’s new school offers. What are his interests? Start researching now so he gets motivated. High school is all about exploration and taking risks. His hobby will lead him to make new friends, making him feel less alone and part of a community.
